Abstract

Megalithic sites, especially isolated standing stones, are believed past some to have been deliberately set out in straight lines known every bit leys. An culling hypothesis is that these points are uniformly and independently distributed. The statistic proposed to exam the compatible hypothesis is the number of triads of points which are near linear, i.e. the largest angle of the triangle they define is inside a small (acceptance) angle of 180°. This statistic is examined for points within a rectangular purlieus and a limiting formula is given for its mean. Simulations ostend that its distribution is approximately normal and that we tin can use the formula for the mean and one derived past Kendall and Kendall (1980) for the variance for credence angles as large as 1°. This simulations also suggest approximate formulae for the hateful and variance of tetrads (iv points, whatever three of which form a triad) and for the mean of pentads (a similar definition for v points). The triad and tetrad data from 52 sites in Cornwall are analysed. These suggested leys are in fact shown to be consequent with the overall density distribution of the sites.
